Volunteering

Yes! We're always looking for new volunteers.

Are you interested in volunteering with 1st Dorchester to support Camp BEL or the Scout Group? If you have experience and training you want to share or want to pickup a new skill, Camp BEL and the existing community would be incredibility excited to welcome you.

Maintaining Camp BEL and hosting multiple annual youth events is only made possible by the incredible volunteers who donate their time, energy, and expertise whether for a single weekend or throughout the year.

To get started, please reach out to our 'coordinator' known as our Group Commissioner at [email protected]

Volunteers become members of Scouts Canada. You can learn more about the general volunteer membership at Scouts.ca. If you decide to join the team, our Group Commissioner will provide you with instructions on how to sign up.

What kind of help is Camp BEL looking for?

The property is fortunate to have a wide variety of activities and programme available for youth from archery to rappelling because of our incredible volunteers who come from across Southwestern Ontario. Here are some of the ways you can get involved which also include a shameless plug for 1st Dorchester Scouting, but if you have something else in mind, reach out to our coordinator to discuss.

Section Scouters
These are the volunteers who meet on a weekly basis to run Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers. All sections are looking for additional volunteers to help deliver the program. If you like working with little kids, that’s Beavers. If you like working with young adults, that’s Venturers and Rovers. The Venturers and Rovers are the ones that go on more extensive adventures and their Scouters act in more of an advisory role.

Camp Staff
These are the people who swing the hammers and other tools, sometimes heavy, to maintain our beautiful Camp BEL.  If you are a fan of the trades and skilled labour, we always have jobs to do. We also find time to eat. This includes our quarter masters and grounds keepers.

Group Committee
These are the admin people who decide where to spend the money and also do the reimbursing of expenses. We also spearhead the PR for 1st Dorchester such as parades, 50/50 draws, other public services and we oversee the volunteers who run the section. We also look after the registration of youth and the screening of volunteers plus training. Fundraising is handled by this group.

Event Staff
1st Dorchester hosts three major camps per year and are currently developing a fourth camp. Some camp staff attend ALL camps and some just have one favourite that they help at per year. We need sub-camp chiefs to run campfire activities and do general head counts for our major camps.

Dorchester Rappel Team
This includes people who run the rappel tower during major camps as well as special requests by Dorchester youth. You can learn more about this team on their page, Dorchester Rappel Team.
